Cook Elementary School
We are actively supporting the efforts of educators who work with some of our most financially challenged students. We support them in several ways, including:
- We gather school supplies to help those children who can not afford them.
- We raise funds to support after-school and summer-school programs.
- We take a collection of crackers and other healthy snacks for teachers to share with their classrooms for morning breaks.
- We make scarves and collect coats to help keep the children warm during the cold winter months.
- We encourage those who are gifted at working with young people to volunteer with the reading program at Cook.

Linda Cruikshank (503) 472-8060 is our coordinator from the COOP helping to organize our efforts. Contact her for information about how you can get involved.
Habitat For Humanity
Habitat is a Christian organization which seeks to eliminate sub standard housing from the face of the planet. Home owners are required to put in 500 hours of sweat equity before they receive a house. They are sold the new home for the cost of the construction materials, and receive a zero interest 20 year loan to pay for the house.
We also actively support the Habitat ReStore. This is a retail outlet which sells used household and construction items. It’s located at 1040 SE 1st St. (Across the street from St. James.) You can volunteer to work at the restore, bring good quality used items to the store, or go and find a used treasure for your own home. For more information about our local Habitat Affiliate go to their website at: http://www.machabitat.org
To volunteer at Habitat contact their volunteer coordinator at: nancy@machabitat.org.
Winter Weather Shelter
We partner with other churches in the area under the leadership of the Yamhill County Gospel Rescue Mission in a building owned by the Seventh Day Adventists to provide emergency nightly cold weather shelter from early December to the end of March. Volunteers are needed for meal prep, maintenance projects and guest services. To volunteer, send an email request to Joyce. Training is provided.
Soup Kitchen at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church
Several days a month we are responsible for cooking and cleaning up for the city wide community meal which is held at St Barnabas Episcopal Church, 822 SW 2nd Street. Skills needed range from cooking large amounts of food to serving it, or simply running the dishwasher. For more information, contact the church office.
CASA Volunteers
CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates are adults who are appointed by the court system to represent the best interest of children and youth whose parents are part of the legal system. Volunteers meet with their young person on a regular basis, are present during court proceedings, and just generally watch out for these children in difficult times. If you would like more information about CASA, contact Irma Karns at ikarns@verizon.net.
Outreach Offering
Each month we designate the loose change and cash received in our Sunday Offerings to a special mission project. Check out the bulletin or newsletter to find out who gets this month's Outreach Offering. Remember to bring change to church to help make change in our community!
